Carnival time is upon us yet again and after listening to all of the soca offerings this year, I have to say that Bunji came out hard and strong. Every tune I heard from him was totally a ‘mash up’ tune.
Bunji has been on the scene for over fifteen years and has been doing his thing ever since. He is a Trinidadian artiste, born from parents of two totally different cultures. I guess that’s why he can so effectively fuse different genres of music and it is so successful. He is a ragga soca artiste, with a musical style that puts him on a totally different level from all of the other local artistes.
His music is also appreciated by different cultures. Imagine my surprise when I went to one of those Asian cultural shows, (I can’t remember which one, although I think it was a Korean one), and one of the performers sang Bunji’s song “Differentology” and I was so amazed at how well he sang it. The performance was well received by the entire audience!
Not to mention that he won the Soul Train Award for Best International Performance for that same song! It was another one of his moments of being the musical genius that he is.
Not one to participate in many competitions, when he did compete, he won the International Soca Monarch Competition four (4) times. So yeah, he is definitely a star.
So, although late in posting again, my pick for February is Bunji Garlin. Here’s hoping that my ears will be treated to more goodies from him for many, many more years to come with God’s blessings.
